What Types of Miracles did Jesus Do?

Posted on March 11, 2026March 11, 2026 by Jesus is LORD

What miracles did Jesus do?

The Gospels in the New Testament describe many miracles performed by Jesus Christ. These stories were central to why people believed he had special authority from God.

Historians cannot verify the miracles scientifically, but they widely agree that people in the 1st century believed Jesus performed extraordinary acts.

Here are the main types of miracles described.

1. Healing the sick

Many stories describe Jesus healing people with diseases or disabilities.

Examples include:

  • Healing a man with paralysis
  • Restoring sight to blind people
  • Healing people with skin diseases (often called leprosy in ancient texts)

These stories appear throughout the gospels like the Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, and Gospel of Luke.

Healing miracles were very common among religious figures in the ancient world.

2. Casting out demons (exorcisms)

Some accounts say Jesus expelled evil spirits from people believed to be possessed.

One famous example is the “Gerasa demoniac” story where Jesus casts demons into a herd of pigs.

Many historians think this reflects the ancient belief that illnesses or strange behavior were caused by spirits.

3. Control over nature

Some stories portray Jesus controlling natural forces.

Examples:

  • Calming a storm on the sea
  • Walking on water
  • Multiplying food to feed thousands

One famous story is the “feeding of the 5,000.”

4. Raising people from the dead

Several stories claim Jesus brought dead people back to life.

Examples include:

  • Raising the daughter of a synagogue leader
  • Raising a man named Lazarus from the dead (in the Gospel of John)

These stories reinforced the belief that Jesus had divine authority.

5. His own resurrection

The most important miracle in Christianity is the claim that Jesus himself rose from the dead after being crucified by the Romans under Pontius Pilate.

Christians see this as proof that Jesus is the Son of God.

Historians cannot prove the resurrection as a historical event, but they widely agree that Jesus’ followers sincerely believed it happened.
