How did Jesus Claim to Be God?

Posted on March 11, 2026March 11, 2026 by Jesus is LORD

How did Jesus claim to be God?

Jesus Christ did not usually say the exact words “I am God” in a simple sentence. Instead, according to the New Testament, he made statements and actions that Jewish listeners understood as claiming equality with God. Christians see several passages as evidence of this.

Here are the main ways Jesus is believed to have claimed to be God:

1. Saying “I and the Father are one”

In the Gospel of John 10:30 Jesus says:

“I and the Father are one.”

His audience reacted strongly and tried to stone him, saying:

“You, a mere man, claim to be God.” (John 10:33)

Christians interpret this as Jesus claiming unity with God the Father.

2. Using the divine name “I AM”

In John 8:58 Jesus said:

“Before Abraham was born, I am.”

This statement connects to the name God used for Himself in Book of Exodus 3:14 when speaking to Moses:
“I AM WHO I AM.”

Because of this connection, many scholars believe Jesus was identifying himself with God’s eternal identity.

3. Accepting worship

In several passages people worship Jesus and he does not reject it, for example:

  • Thomas the Apostle says to him: “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)

In Jewish tradition, worship was meant for God alone.

4. Claiming authority to forgive sins

In the Gospel of Mark 2:5–7 Jesus forgives a man’s sins. Religious leaders respond:

“Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Jesus then heals the man to demonstrate his authority.

5. Calling himself the “Son of Man” from prophecy

Jesus frequently called himself the “Son of Man,” referencing a divine figure in the prophecy of the Book of Daniel 7:13–14 who receives eternal authority and worship.

When Jesus applied this title to himself before the Jewish council, they accused him of blasphemy.

✅ Summary

Christians believe Jesus claimed to be God through:

  • Statements of unity with God
  • Using the divine name “I AM”
  • Accept ing worship
  • Forgiving sins
  • Applying divine prophecies to himself

Different religions interpret these passages differently. For example:

Islam: Jesus in Islam (Isa) is a prophet but not God.

Christianity: Jesus is God in human form.

Judaism: Jesus was not the Messiah or divine.
